At Forest Hills Primary School, we use the White Rose curriculum as a basis for Mathematics. We feel that this offers an excellent platform for the children to develop fluency, reasoning and problem solving skills. Where possible, links to the wider curriculum are also made effectively, for example Roman Numerals are taught when children are learning about the Roman Empire.

Our children’s understanding is constantly monitored by teaching staff using formative assessment, which supports teachers to plan next steps effectively.

We have developed a thorough and in-depth Calculation Policy to support children and staff when teaching the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division). This supports the children on their mathematical journey throughout the education.

We also develop children’s mental calculation skills through our mathematical clubs, which focus on addition and multiplication facts. Children are encouraged to learn and practice key calculation facts and all of their times tables as these form the basis of mathematics.
